Vietnam’s Q1 foreign visitor numbers surpasses pre-pandemic levels

In the first quarter of 2024, there were 4.6 million international visitors to Vietnam, up 3.2% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019 as the nation accelerated visa-reduction measures.

According to a study from the General Statistics Office, the number for January–March increased by 72% compared to the same time last year and surpassed 25% of this year’s objective of 18 million foreign visitors.

With 1.23 million visitors, South Korea remained the leading country from which Vietnam received tourists, followed by mainland China (889,000), Taiwan (299,000), and the United States (232,129). Moreover, Japan continued to be the fifth-largest source of tourists, contributing 179,000 visitors, closely followed by Malaysia with 143,000.

Australia has emerged as the seventh largest source of tourists for Vietnam’s inbound tourism, with a total of 132,000 visitors, which ranked in the top 10 last year.

Thailand had 118,000 arrivals, placing it in eighth position, while India had 116,000 passengers and Cambodia had 113,000 arrivals.

GSO credits the robust revival of tourism to the efficacy of advantageous visa regulations and tourist marketing initiatives in which Vietnam now offers tourist visas with a duration of up to three months to nationals of nearly every country and territory.

The government has directed immigration officials to potentially exclude individuals from affluent nations from obtaining visas for trips lasting between six to 12 months. Additionally, the government plans to broaden the list of countries whose residents are unconditionally free from visa requirements, which now includes just 13 countries.
