- Stay Longer in Vietnam: Vietnam has increased the e-Visa duration from 30 days to an impressive 90 days. The National Assembly officially approved this change on June 24, 2023.
- Flexible Multiple Entries: In more good news, Vietnam e-Visas now allow for multiple entries. This means you can freely come and go from the country as many times as you want with the same visa. You can also stay for up to 90 days each time, with no restrictions.
These exciting changes will take effect on August 15, 2023. Starting from that date, citizens of eligible countries can easily obtain a 90-day multiple-entry electronic visa for Vietnam.
Vietnam has made further updates to its visa policy. Now, visitors from visa-exempt countries can stay for a more convenient 45 days, an extension from the previous 15 days.
Are 3-month tourist visas now available for Vietnam?
Starting on August 15, 2023, eligible tourists can now apply for a 90-day electronic visa to visit Vietnam.

In addition to the extended e-Visa option, individuals from visa-exempt countries can now enjoy a visa-free stay of up to 45 days in Vietnam, starting from the same date.
Why Vietnam is updating its tourist visa policy?
Vietnam is updating its tourist visa policy, a year after welcoming back tourists following COVID-19 restrictions. However, the recovery of the tourism industry has been slower than anticipated.
Even though Vietnam quickly reopened to tourists after the pandemic, it didn’t see a significant rise in visitor numbers. In 2022, the country welcomed only 3.6 million foreign tourists, which is roughly 20% of the pre-pandemic numbers from 2019.
Promoting domestic tourism in Vietnam
Considering these statistics, individuals in the tourism industry are urging the Vietnamese government to relax visa requirements as a means to stimulate the economy. The aim is to achieve 8 million tourist arrivals in 2023, and people consider easing visa requirements a means to help reach that goal.
However, there is some good news: Vietnam is currently seeing a significant rise in domestic tourism. In 2022, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism reported a remarkable 101 million domestic travelers, exceeding the expected 60 million by 50%.
Other steps to boost tourism in Vietnam
Vietnam has ambitious plans for its tourism industry, aiming to welcome 35 million visitors annually by 2030, as outlined by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST).
Apart from extending E-visa validity to three months, Vietnam is exploring several other ways to increase tourism numbers. According to Luong Hoai Nam, a member of the Tourism Advisory Board (TAB), these strategies include:
- Travelers can enter and exit Vietnam multiple times during their Southeast Asia stay, making it more convenient to explore destinations such as Singapore and Thailand in a single trip.
- Negotiating long-term visa-exemptions with significant countries.
- Expanding visa waivers’ validity from 1-3 years to 5 years.
- Ensuring consistent pricing for visa services.
The Prime Minister of Vietnam has already taken steps to update and improve policies and regulations in pursuit of these objectives.
